What are the Dominican Republic travel requirements?

The Dominican Republic is a country located in the Caribbean. It’s on the Hispaniola island, also shared with Haiti. It’s a famous tourist destination for those looking to enjoy some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Water sports, resorts and more awaits!

To be able to enjoy everything that this island has to offer, you will need to meet certain Dominican Republic travel requirements. Discover what they are here.

Dominican Republic travel requirements

Passport

Having a valid passport is part of the mandatory Dominican Republic entry requirements.

Visa

The eTicket Dominican Republic is part of the Dominican Republic travel requirements, and it’s mandatory for all travelers, including citizens of the country. You will need an eTicket to enter and leave the Dominican Republic, and it’s only valid for those traveling by air.

If you’re one of the visa exempt nationalities and you’ve successfully applied for the eTicket, you will be able to stay in the Dominican Republic for up to 90 days.

This is not a visa, so you might need to apply for both types of travel documents.

Travel insurance

Although having travel insurance isn’t included in the Dominican Republic travel requirements, it’s always recommended for those embarking on an international trip.

Vaccines

The only mandatory vaccine included in the Dominican Republic entry requirements is the vaccine against yellow fever, but only for those arriving from these Brazilian states: Espírito Santo, Mina Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo. It’s also mandatory for those who’ve had a 12-hour or longer stopover in those states.

Besides that, the CDC recommends the following vaccinations for those wishing to visit the Dominican Republic:

Chickenpox (Varicella)
Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis
Flu (influenza)
Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR)
Polio
Shingles
Cholera. These are the areas with active cholera transmission: Barahona, Distrito National, Elías Piña, La Altagracia, Monte Cristi and Santo Domingo.
Hepatitis A
Hepatitis B
Rabies
Typhoid

Moreover, malaria is endemic to this country. This means that you should consult with your doctor to acquire antimalarial medication, especially if your travel itinerary includes locations close to the border with Haiti, and the provinces of: La Altagracia, San Cristóbal, San Juan, Santo Domingo and Distrito Nacional. These regions encompass the resort areas of Bávaro and Punta Cana so, if you’re traveling there, make sure to be protected against malaria.

Currency

The currency of the Dominican Republic is the Dominican Peso (DOP). The banknotes available are of 50, 100, 1000 and 2000 pesos. The coins, on the other hand, are of 1, 5, 10 and 25 pesos.

The Dominican peso is divided in 100 cents. However, they’re no longer in use.
