What is a CheckMig and why do you need it?
The CheckMig is an official travel authorization for every person that intends to enter or exit Colombia by air, including citizens of the country. It is requested 100% online and it requires you to provide all your travel information before the trip.
This was implemented to streamline border control procedures. Since they have the traveler's details in advance, the immigration officers can process arrivals and departures more efficiently.
Remember that it is mandatory both to enter and to leave the country, which means you will have to apply for it twice. Not having it may cause you to be forbidden from boarding the flight. With Visagov, you can request both at the same time in the same process.

Difference between the CheckMig and a visa
The CheckMig is not a visa: it is a travel authorization. While the visa might not be mandatory for everyone, since there are exempt countries, this online authorization is. Everyone, with no exception, needs to present the CheckMig, including Colombian citizens.

What to expect upon arrival in Colombia?
Before heading to immigration control, the airline staff or the airport personnel may check if you have completed the CheckMig. It is fundamental to keep a digital or printed copy of your approved authorization with you at all times.
When you get to the control, an immigration officer will scan your passport and verify your CheckMig information. They may take your photograph and/or fingerprints, a standard biometric capture for foreign visitors.
