Whether you’re interested in exploring ancient ruins, immersing yourself in local culture, or simply relaxing on the beach, Egypt is the perfect destination.

But before you pack your bags, here’s everything you need to know about Egypt's entry requirements.

Egypt entry requirements

Passport

Most international travelers must fulfill one of Egypt's entry requirements: having a valid passport. Its validity has to be of at least 6 months from the date you enter Egypt.

Keep in mind that you're going to need a clear, color photocopy of your passport to apply for the Egypt visa. The Egyptian government is very strict with the quality of the image, so make sure yours is up to par.

Visa

Most international travelers are required to apply for a visa in order to fulfill Egypt's entry requirements. You’ll find here all the information you need to know about applying for an Egypt e visa. Visagov can also help you with the whole application process.

You're going to need to have your credit or debit card on hand to pay for the application.

Once you receive your approved visa for Egypt, you will need to print it and present it with your passport on arrival.

Travel insurance

Travel insurance isn't one of Egypt's entry requirements, but it is highly recommended. You may be wondering: is it safe to travel to Egypt? Don't worry, it is.

However, travel insurance can provide financial protection in case of unexpected events such as delays, trip cancellations, medical emergencies and lost or stolen baggage. It's always better to be protected against all possible issues that may arise on another country.

Of course, we encourage you to carefully review your travel insurance policy to ensure it caters to your specific needs.

Currency

Egypt’s national currency is the Egyptian pound (EGP). The current exchange rate is:

  • 1 EGP = 0,029 EUR
  • 1 EGP = 0,032 USD
  • 1 EGP = 0,025 GBP

You can exchange currencies at the airport, hotels, banks and exchange offices.

It's important to know that you're not allowed to take the currency of Egypt out of the country. To make sure you don't have to make any last minute visits to the bank, only exchange currencies in small amounts. If you have any Egyptian pounds left, exchange them before boarding your flight.

Vaccination

Yellow fever vaccination is one of the mandatory entry requirements to Egypt for travelers from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission.

Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that travelers to Egypt be up to date on routine vaccinations below:

  • Measles-mumps-rubella (MMR)
  • Diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis
  • Varicella (chickenpox)
