Do You Need a Visa to Travel to Mexico?

Whether a visa is required for Mexico depends on the traveler's nationality. However, there is one document that all visitors must obtain without exception: the FMM or Multiple Immigration Form.

The FMM is the official document that certifies legal entry into Mexico. If you do not need a visa, you will only need to complete the FMM online. Once approved, you must present it upon arrival, where authorities will stamp it. It is essential to keep it until you leave the country, as you will be required to hand it in when departing.

This document has two parts: Mexican authorities retain one as proof of entry, and the other must accompany you throughout your stay.

When entering by land, the FMM validity period begins from the moment the entry stamp is issued.

Depending on your nationality, you may also need to obtain a Mexican visa in addition to the FMM

Types of Visa for Mexico

Mexico offers different visa categories depending on the purpose and length of stay.

Multiple Immigration Form (FMM)

The FMM is not a conventional visa it is the mandatory entry document for all travelers visiting Mexico. Those who also require a visa may apply for one once their FMM has been approved.

The electronic FMM is processed entirely online, allowing travelers to arrive in the country with the document already approved and avoid border wait times. There are three options:

  • Electronic FMM for land entry.
  • Electronic FMM for air entry.
  • Traditional FMM, completed at the point of entry (airports, seaports, and border crossings).

All three have the same legal validity. The difference is that the traditional FMM is completed upon arrival.

Documents required to apply for the electronic FMM:
