Requirements for Traveling to Indonesia: Documentation and Formalities

Map of Indonesia

Indonesia is a destination that captivates from the very first moment, but before you pack your bags it is important to know all the formalities required to enter the country without any issues. Here you will find the updated entry requirements for Indonesia in 2026: what documentation you need, what forms you must complete, and what health recommendations to keep in mind.

Passport

To enter Indonesia you need a valid passport with at least 6 months of validity from your entry date and a minimum of 2 blank pages available. The document must be in good condition: damaged, expired, or previously reported as lost passports may result in denial of entry.

Please note that Indonesia does not accept emergency passports. If yours is close to expiring or in poor condition, renew it before you travel.

Visa

Most foreign travelers need a visa to enter Indonesia. The most convenient and recommended option is to apply for the e-VOA (Electronic Visa on Arrival) online before traveling, which also allows you to use the autogates at Jakarta and Bali airports and avoid immigration lines.

You can find full details on visa types, requirements, prices, and how to apply in our complete guide to the Indonesia visa. If you already know what you need, apply for your Indonesia e-VOA directly through Visagov.

All Indonesia Form

Since September 2025, Indonesia has centralized all arrival formalities into a single free digital form: the All Indonesia Arrival Card. This form combines the immigration declaration, customs declaration, and health declaration into one process, replacing the paper forms previously distributed on board.

It is mandatory for all international travelers at the country's main entry points (Bali, Jakarta, and Surabaya), and is being progressively rolled out at other airports and ports. You must complete it within the 72 hours before your arrival through the official portal allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id. The process takes approximately 2 minutes and, once completed, you will receive a QR code by email that you must present upon arrival.

Bali Tourist Levy

If your trip includes the province of Bali, you will also need to pay a mandatory tourist levy of 150,000 IDR (approximately 9 EUR), known as the Bali Levy. This levy applies to each entry into Bali, even if you are arriving from another island in Indonesia, and also applies to minors.

The most recommended way to pay is online before you travel through the official portal lovebali.baliprov.go.id, where you will receive a QR code to present upon arrival. It can also be paid at the airport, though lines can be long.

Vaccines

There are no mandatory vaccines to enter Indonesia, with one exception: the yellow fever vaccine is required for travelers coming from countries where the disease is endemic, or who have had a layover of more than 12 hours in one of those countries in the 9 months prior to travel.

Outside of that case, there are no vaccination requirements to enter the country, although the following vaccines are recommended before traveling:

  • Hepatitis A and B
  • Typhoid fever
  • Tetanus and diphtheria
  • Rabies, especially if you plan outdoor activities or contact with animals in rural areas

If you plan to visit regions such as Borneo, Papua, rural Sumatra, or the Nusa Tenggara islands, consult your doctor or an International Vaccination Center (IVC) in advance, as the risk of malaria and other tropical diseases may be higher in these areas.

Travel insurance

Travel insurance is not mandatory to enter Indonesia, but it is strongly recommended. Private medical care for foreigners can be expensive, and in remote areas of the archipelago access to quality healthcare facilities is limited. A policy with good medical coverage, cancellation, and baggage loss protection is an investment that can save you a great deal of trouble.

Return ticket

One of the formal requirements to obtain the e-VOA is having a confirmed outbound flight reservation from Indonesia with a visible date within the visa's validity period. Immigration authorities may request it both at check-in and upon arrival in the country.

Currency

The currency of Indonesia is the Indonesian rupiah (IDR). Although card payment is accepted at hotels, shopping malls, and major tourist establishments, cash remains essential at local markets, for transportation, and in rural areas. It is recommended to always carry a sufficient amount of rupiah for day-to-day expenses.

You can exchange currency at banks, exchange offices, and ATMs. If you are bringing US dollars to exchange, the bills must be in perfect condition: no creases, tears, or markings, as money changers will refuse damaged bills or those from series prior to 2013.
