Are you planning your trip to Egypt? Before you pack your bags, it is essential to know the entry requirements, the necessary documentation, and some practical tips that will make your trip go much more smoothly. Below you will find everything you need to know to travel to Egypt without any issues.

Requirements to Travel to Egypt

Visa

A visa is mandatory to enter Egypt for most nationalities. You can obtain your Egypt visa in three ways:

  • Online (e-Visa): processed before your trip, allowing you to arrive in the country with everything sorted and avoid lines at the airport.
  • On arrival (visa on arrival): available at Egypt's main international airports. The cost is approximately $25 USD.
  • At the consulate: for extended stays or long-term visas.

The tourist visa allows a stay of up to 30 days with a single entry. Exceeding this period is a violation that may result in penalties. Please note that a visa is also required for cruises to Egypt.

The only countries exempt from the Egypt visa requirement are: Bahrain, Israel, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, Oman, and Saudi Arabia. For any other nationality, we recommend checking your eligibility before traveling.

Passport

A passport is the essential entry document for traveling to Egypt. It must be a standard passport, in good condition, and have a minimum validity of 6 months from the date of departure from the country. A national ID card is not valid for entry into Egypt.

It is advisable to always carry a photocopy of your passport when going out to explore. In the event of loss or theft, it will greatly simplify the replacement process.

Vaccines

There are no mandatory vaccines required to travel to Egypt from the United States. However, an international yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for travelers over 9 months of age arriving from countries with a risk of transmission or who have had a layover of more than 12 hours in one of those countries. Failure to present it may result in the traveler being placed in quarantine for 6 days.

As a general health recommendation, it is advisable to check the updated guidelines from the World Health Organization before traveling.

Travel Medical Insurance

Although it is not always an official requirement, taking out comprehensive travel medical insurance is highly recommended. Egypt does not have reciprocal healthcare agreements with the United States, meaning any private medical care will be at the traveler's expense.

If you plan to take part in activities such as scuba diving in the Red Sea, hiking, or desert motorbike excursions, make sure your policy specifically covers these activities, as many standard insurance plans exclude them.

Additional Recommended Documentation

  • Outbound flight from the country: while not always requested, it is a good idea to have it available in case the authorities ask for it.
  • Printed accommodation reservation: hotels in Egypt typically register your passport upon arrival. Having a printed confirmation speeds up the process.

Currency in Egypt

The official currency of Egypt is the Egyptian pound (EGP). It is important to note that many establishments, markets, and tourist services only accept cash payments, so it is recommended to carry cash and exchange it at local currency exchange offices or banks upon arrival.

For occasional payments or ATM withdrawals, a credit card with no foreign transaction fees is a good option. Keep in mind that Egyptian ATMs may set per-transaction limits, and some cards also cap the number of free monthly withdrawals.

Plan ahead and estimate how much cash you will need based on your planned activities to avoid any unexpected issues during your trip.

Best Time to Travel to Egypt

Egypt has a desert climate with very hot summers and mild winters. The best time to visit Egypt is from October to April, when temperatures are more pleasant for exploring archaeological sites and cities.

  • Fall (October and November): warm and manageable weather, fewer tourists, and more competitive prices. October is the most recommended month for a first visit.
  • Winter (December to February): peak season with temperatures between 50°F and 68°F. Ideal for visiting Cairo, Luxor, and Abu Simbel, though prices are higher and advance booking is recommended.
  • Spring (March to May): pleasant temperatures, although the Khamsin wind can cause sandstorms between March and April.
  • Summer (June to August): extreme heat, with temperatures that can exceed 100°F in Cairo and Luxor. Only recommended for coastal destinations such as Hurghada or Sharm el-Sheikh.
