Mexico is one of the most visited destinations in the world, and for good reason. Its rich culture, historical heritage, natural landscapes and internationally acclaimed gastronomy make it a truly unique country. Before you pack your bags, it is essential to know the requirements to travel to Mexico and make sure your documentation is in order.
Requirements to Travel to Mexico
Passport
To enter Mexico you need a valid passport with at least 3 blank pages. If your stay is 7 days or less, you may be able to enter with your national identity document depending on your country of origin; for longer stays, a passport is mandatory.
If you hold dual Mexican nationality, you must enter and exit the country using your Mexican passport.
Mexico FMM (Multiple Immigration Form)
Every foreigner entering Mexico by land must obtain the Mexico FMM before crossing the border. This document is mandatory, must be requested online in advance and presented printed alongside your passport at the entry point.
Please note that the FMM is not the same as a visa: depending on your nationality, you may need both documents. Check our complete guide on how to apply for a Mexico visa to find out if this applies to your case.

Travel Insurance
Mexico does not require travel insurance for visitors, but we strongly recommend taking out a policy before your trip. Comprehensive coverage will protect you against medical emergencies, theft, lost luggage and cancellations. Travelling with adequate insurance gives you peace of mind throughout your stay.
Vaccines to Travel to Mexico
No vaccines are mandatory to enter Mexico. However, health authorities recommend being up to date with the following:
- Chickenpox
- Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis
- Influenza
- Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR)
- Hepatitis A and B
- Chikungunya
- Poliomyelitis
- Shingles
- Rabies
- Typhus
Exception: if you are travelling from a country with a risk of yellow fever, Mexico will require a vaccination certificate for this disease. For the most up-to-date health recommendations for travellers, visit CDC Travel — Mexico.
Currency
The official currency is the Mexican peso (MXN), which shares its symbol with the dollar. You can exchange currency at the airport, banks or authorised exchange offices at your destination. If you prefer to exchange money before you travel, Global Exchange is a reliable option.
