Temperatures range from 70 to 90 °F (21 to 32 °C) and humidity levels oscillate around 80%. The months between May and October are the hottest of the year while December, January, February and March are the coolest. 

The rainy season spans from April to October or November, but rainfall varies across the island and depending on the time of the year. Also, note that showers generally last for less than half an hour.

When is the hurricane season in Puerto Rico?

The hurricane season of Puerto Rico usually spans from June to November. Even though there's a chance of encountering a storm during this time, it's also the cheapest time to travel in Puerto Rico. It's also the best time to go to the beach, according to Puerto Ricans, because of the very warm temperatures.

It's worth noting that a hurricane is not a yearly phenomenon, it doesn't happen every single year. 

When is the best time to visit Puerto Rico?

  • December to March: During this season, skies are usually blue, the sun is shining and the temperatures are pleasant. That’s what makes it one of the best times to visit Puerto Rico, driving the prices up at the same time. December could be the best month to go to Puerto Rico: it's a great time to explore the island's natural wonders and enjoy some of the most colorful events in the Caribbean, including Nochebuena, Fiesta de los Reyes Magos and San Sebastián Street Festival.
  • April to June: Temperatures are still comfortable and prices start to drop, which makes it the perfect season for intrepid travelers on a budget. It is one of the best times to go to Puerto Rico because there are several festivals, such as the Puerto Rico Restaurant Week or Noche de San Juan. It’s also a the best time to visit historical sites and beautiful parks such as the El Yunque National Park.
  • July to November: While this season sees more rainfall than the rest of the year, it’s the best time to visit if you’re looking for peace and quiet, as this is the off-season in Puerto Rico. It is dry season in Puerto Rico, which means that rainfall is generally lower compared to the wetter months. 

March is fairly similar to February with a slight increase in rainfall.

The weather in Puerto Rico in April is warm and comfortable, making it a popular time for visitors. It is the end of the dry season so there can be some occasional showers.

The average high temperature during the day is around 85°F (29°C), while the average low temperature at night is about 75°F (24°C).  

April is a popular time for tourists to visit Puerto Rico due to the pleasant weather and spring break season. While it might not be as crowded as the peak winter months, there are crowds.

Puerto Rico weather in May is warm and pleasant, marking the beginning of the transition from the dry season to the rainy season. You can expect temperatures of around 87°F (31°C) - 76°F (24°C). 

Since it is considered the start of the rainy season in Puerto Rico, it is not as wet as the rainy months like February to April.

June and July mark the beginning of the rainy season in Puerto Rico. The average high temperature during the day is around 88°F (31°C) and about 78°F (26°C) at night. 

These months fall within the Atlantic hurricane season, which officially lasts from June 1st to November 30th. While the risk of hurricanes affecting Puerto Rico is higher during this period, it's important to know that not every day is affected by a hurricane or tropical storm.

Puerto Rico weather in September is very much similar to August. It is in the rainy season and experiences warm temperatures that average from 88°F (31°C) to 77°F (25°C). It also falls within the Atlantic hurricane season and it is considered the off-peak tourist season like August.

Puerto Rico weather in October corresponds to the transition from rainy season to drier season. Temperature during the day is around 87°F (31°C), while the average low temperature at night is about 76°F (24°C). 

During this month, there might still be some scattered showers, but not so much as in August and September. October falls within the Atlantic hurricane season.

The main difference is that December is a festive month in Puerto Rico, with various holiday celebrations, parades, and events taking place. There’s always a good reason to celebrate for Puerto Ricans, which explains why there are so many events and festivals on the island throughout the year! And here are four of the most popular ones.

  • San Sebastián Street Festival: Held in January in the capital city of San Juan, the San Sebastián Street Festival is an institution on the island and is often referred to as the party of the year by the locals! The festival is held as a celebration of Puerto Rican culture and traditions and includes food stands, live music, dance performances and cultural events. If you happen to be in Puerto Rico during that time, this is a must-see!
  • Feria de Artesanías de Ponce: This authentic craft fair takes place in the city of Ponce in April every year over the course of three days. The popular event features local artists and artisans selling their handcrafted wares, including jewelry, pottery and textiles. It’s the perfect spot for curious travellers looking for authentic souvenirs to bring back home or simply wanting to learn more about Puerto Rican craft.
  • Noche de San Juan: The 23rd of June is a very special day for Puerto Ricans. Every year, locals celebrate la Noche de San Juan, a summer solstice event featuring bonfires, live music, and local food generally enjoyed on one of the Puerto Rico beaches. The tradition sees locals taking at least three backward plunges at the stroke of midnight. It is a popular event across the island and one we would highly recommend if you happen to be in Puerto Rico in June!
  • Festival de las Máscaras de Hatillo: Also called El Día de Los Santos Inocentes, this colorful festival is inspired by a biblical story. According to the bible, when he found out about baby Jesus, King Herodes ordered his guards to kill all the children under 3. So, every year, on the 28th of December, locals in Hatillo dress up as vejigantes, a Puerto Rican character representing the guards coming to take the children. This colorful and lively parade is worth seeing if you’re in the area! 

What to pack and tips

There are multiple useful travel tips for Puerto Rico, here are some of them: 

  • Sun protection: Puerto Rico is a tropical island, and the sun can be harsh. So, bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun.
  • Comfortable clothing: As discussed, the temperature in Puerto Rico can reach 90 °F (32 °C), so pack light and breathable clothing as well as swimwear for the beach.
  • Footwear: If you’re planning to explore the mountains or the rainforest, make sure to bring a pair of lightweight and comfortable shoes.
