Azerbaijan is an increasingly popular destination with travellers, a country that surprises us with the modernity of Baku, its rich heritage and millennia-long history. However, there are some security tips that you should know before picking it as the destination for your next holiday.

Is Azerbaijan Safe to Visit?

The area of Baku and its surroundings are entirely safe. The only advice is to be cautious, especially at night, and avoid suburban neighbourhoods. It is also advised to take extreme precautions when driving at night because of the poor status of the roads.

The border between Azerbaijan and Armenia is an area in conflict. It’s not advisable to travel to Nagomo-Karabakh or the border area under military occupation that surrounds it. In fact, anyone visiting this area without permission from the Azerbaijani authorities may be denied if they try to enter the country again.

Another area that is risky, but to a lesser extent, is Astara. However, if it’s not necessary, any type of travel to the Iranian border is discouraged.

Discretion in the use of clothing and belongings

It should be noted that this country is Muslim, but the number of women with headscarves seen on the street is not higher than that of another European city. In general, Azerbaijani women match their clothes very well and they pay attention to all the details. Men are also impeccable and immaculate, with well-ironed clothes and a casual look that lasts until the end of the day.

Wearing long and loose clothes and a scarf to visit the mosques is advised. As for hair, if the colour is not natural, there may be all kinds of looks and disapproval. It’s good to always be respectful of their culture because, although Azerbaijanis are very kind, they can also be a little discreet.
