Who is the head of the Australian Embassy in the UK?

The head of the Australian High Commission in London is the Honourable Stephen Francis Smith. He started working in the High Commission in January, 2023.

The head of the Australian Embassy in Dublin is the Honourable Gary Gray, AO. He has been fulfilling this role since September, 2020. He’s known for being in charge of the first Australian Embassy to fly the Australian Aboriginal flag alongside the Australian flag.

What is the difference between an Australian embassy and an Australian consulate?

The difference between embassies and consulates is that, although they are both diplomatic missions, they serve different purposes.

An embassy is in charge of the relationship of its country with others, of the big picture policies.

In contrast, a consulate or high commission has a narrower scope of action. It deals mostly with its own citizens. That’s why, in this case, for visa processing you need to visit the High Commission in London, not the Australian Embassy in Dublin. That’s also the case if you need to renew your passport.
