Kenya is one of the most beautiful countries in southern Africa and thousands of travellers travel to Kenya every year without issues. Is it safe to travel to Kenya?

With careful planning and some basic security measures, you can enjoy the incredible things to do in Kenya

Since February 2018, it is advisable to avoid the Kenya-Somalia border counties of Mandera, Wajir and Garissa. Also, the coastal areas that include the territory of Tana River, the county of Lamu and the areas of Kalifi, north of Malindi. 

It is also advisable to stay out of the Eastleigh neighbourhood in Nairobi at all times and the area of the old town of Mombasa after dark. 

Even though there are certain areas in the big cities in Kenya that should be avoided, all the main tourist attractions are not included in any of these restricted areas, so you will not miss anything important. Just make sure you stay in a safe neighborhood and be cautious.

Lastly, make sure to know all the travel requirements for Kenya to avoid any issues on arrival.

Is Kenya safe to visit for tourists?

It is always impossible to guarantee 100% safety but, as in most cities, crime is worse in the poorest neighbourhoods, the outskirts and more remote areas or in illegal settlements. Avoid these areas unless you travel with a trusted native or guide and you will greatly increase your chances of a safe trip. 

Also, do not travel alone at night, do not show off expensive jewelry or devices and take enough money and keep it safe.

To make the most out of the Kenyan coast, the best thing you can do is pick a well-known hotel and avoid walking along the beach at night, especially by yourself. Leave your valuables in the hotel safe and always keep your belongings on sight.

Is Kenya safe to travel around and drive?

The roads are in poor condition, so is Kenya safe if you want to drive? Less so than other aspects of travel in Kenya. 

You should avoid driving or travelling by bus at night, as it is more difficult to avoid obstacles and some vehicles do not have headlights or brake lights.
